An essential difference that distinguishes Purgatory from other unearthly places, such as heaven and hell, is that it is not an end point. Purgatory is like a passage, though it has no course. People find themselves in a state of repetition in which a permanent choice is always postponed. It doesn’t hurt here in purgatory, but it gives no real pleasure either. For most of the time, the echoing is just a bit annoying.
This so-called space in between is like a vacuum. A freeze of a final pose. One is not confronted here with its finiteness, but with its eternal continuity. While indecisively pacing, people here fill their days with their own final pose burned into their retinas.
The stage between the artificial, plastic flames became a collective work in which both actors and artists were invited to participate. Within the role of director, great attention was given to improvisation and spontaneity. The nature of the invitation varied from person to person. At times, there was a more focused plan for a character; at others, greater space was given for personal input and the unforeseen.
